WYR have your partner turn your engagement into a LinkedInfluencer post or be exposed for running your own fan account?
Context: The first part relates to a LinkedIn blog post where someone attached a picture of their proposal with the caption "Here's what it taught me about B2B sales", while the second option takes inspiration from Normani dodging a question about whether she's behind her own fan account.
Georjia: I get uncomfortable when I see people on LinkedIn discuss things that you would consider personal or private – like your engagement. Wrong social media, post it on Instagram or something! I feel like it’s a post in the wrong form. But turning your engagement post into a B2B sales explanation: JAIL! The ring is now becoming a business deal and they would now need to prove their B2B skills that they love to brag about on LinkedIn and convince me to stay with them. But being exposed for running your own fan account? Yikes. I understand artists have a HQ page (i.e., Taylor Nation, HSHQ) where they confirm information about the artist from their team – why couldn’t they make the account into that? It’s just embarrassing knowing you are the person behind the phone tweeting about how much you love the artist. CRINGE! I think in this case, I might take the LinkedIn post.
Annie: I find myself on LinkedIn much more than I would like these days – partly because of work, but also because it’s like a Gen Z adult’s Facebook (which is worse). It’s intriguing seeing how some people you went to school with turn into LinkedInfluencers, taking part in the game of posting platitudes and how ‘x failure actually turned into y success’. LinkedIn has specific formulas that work, and we have to admit some people are just clever enough to play along, as much as we like to think we’re not as cringe as the people leaning into those performances. However, if my own partner capitalised on our engagement through a LinkedIn post, I would seriously have to reconsider whether I’m the right person to marry them. They didn’t even talk about me! What do you MEAN your engagement taught you about B2B sales?! I’d rather get caught running my own fan account – we’re constantly being told to talk to us like we’re our own friend, surely a fan account could be an extension of that.
